Nail Art Tutorial – Mermaid Manicure
I only need to have a look at my social media feed to know that mermaid nails are still a very popular choice for summer nails. The easiest way to create that scale reflecting, multicoloured shimmer is with a use of mermaid powder. Painting the actual scales can be time consuming and fiddly. This is why I decided to prepare a tutorial to show you that painting scales can be quick and easy. All you need is a few similar shades and a dotting tool! Let’s have a look.
Step 1. Start with a layer of white polish such as Barry M Cotton. We will only be applying small and thin amounts of polish for this design so the white base should make the colours pop.
Step 2. Prepare a selection of blue, green and purple polishes. You will need about 5-6 shades. Grab hold of a large dotting tool and apply a dot using a green polish (Models Own Turquoise Gloss) starting from the bottom of your nail.
TIP: If you start your design at the top of your nail, your scales will appear upside down. However, you prefer your scales pointing that way, go for it. It’s totally up to you!
Step 3. Using the same dotting tool keep applying purple, green and blue polishes one next to another in a straight line. I used A England Whispering Waves, Celestial Cosmetics Sesir Kipi, A England The Blessed Damosel, Color Club Disco Dress.
Step 4. Keep applying the colours in the same order but this time above your first line of dots. Overlap them slightly and try to place them ‘in between’ the dots below.
Step 5. Keep going with this technique towards your cuticles and you will soon see a scale pattern emerging.
Step 6. Wait for your design to dry to avoid smudges and apply a top coat. I used my trusted Glisten & Glow HK Girl top coat.
How easy was that? It’s really effective as a holiday themed accent nail or try a full set for a true sea side feel! Here’s another look at the design. What do you think about it?
